Amadeus is one of the largest reservation systems serving customers such as Air France, British Airways, Icelandair and Qantas. And each reservation system needs to be able to communicate with each other through the back channels of the global distribution system.

However, these outdated, outdated passenger record systems required to share traveler data internationally do not consider the scale of security required today and are grossly inadequate for keeping passenger records secure.

To make matters worse, regular hackers don’t have to leave their homes. Dozens of people post boarding passes and barcodes on Twitter and Instagram every day with the #boardingpass and #planetickets hashtags.
However, Rotem said an inherent weakness in the way the reservation system generates passenger name record numbers makes it easy to use hacker-generated booking references to launch brute force attacks on airline websites linked to Amadeus.
Because the Amadeus system did not limit the number of requests it could process at one time, Rotem was able to run a script that randomly generated booking references. I was waiting for a positive reply to come back. In some cases, the script found booking references attached to real customers. Because the parts of each booking number generated by Amadeus are sequential, it is easy to keep attacking passengers with the same or similar last names. And because there was no rate cap, researchers could run as many requests as they wanted each minute, speeding up the process. (I’ve seen a short video of a script that generates a booking reference, but I haven’t checked any of them, as logging in with someone else’s booking reference is illegal.)
For example, a skilled attacker could use this technique to book their own flights or convert accumulated flight miles. But a tedious hacker can wreak havoc on many passengers’ credit cards.
How Hackers Slipped By British Airways’ Data Defenses
In total, the Amadeus website claims to support over 200 airlines. We wondered how far the vulnerability had spread.
Using cookie data collected by El Al from RiskIQ, a cyberthreat intelligence company that scours the web for information, we were able to locate dozens of other affected airlines. “While RiskIQ crawls, the crawler acts as a browser it needs to emulate: it retains cookies and other site-specific metadata,” said Yonathan Klijnsma, threat researcher at RiskIQ.
We reached out to several large airlines believed to be affected by the vulnerability, but none of Air France, British Airways, Icelandair or Qantas mentioned when contacted prior to posting.
When contacted, Amadeus confirmed that it had been alerted to the matter and took “immediate action,” a spokesperson said. “We are working closely with our customers and we regret any confusion this situation has caused.”
