We’ve tested this glazed ham recipe on hundreds (if not thousands) of guests over the years, and it’s the best we’ve tried. Most of the time, we humans try to bake hams for Christmas, and they end up being dry without taste and cause serious anxiety before the guests arrive. This must be the nasty kind of ham.

The best glazes for baked ham include honey, brown sugar, or maple syrup. The saltiness of the ham and the sweetness of the glaze complement each other so well, it’s one of the ingredients for a very special glaze.

The glaze I went with is a combination of butter, brown sugar, honey, Dijon mustard (gives the ham a nice kick) and crushed garlic cloves.

For this reason, I recommend cutting the skin. The skin of the ham is fully cooked and NOT dry. We tried grilling, baking at a high temperature and deep-frying.

When you buy the ham, you will notice that there is a wonderful layer of fat just under the skin. Don’t cut this. This fat becomes a dry and sticky coating to the glaze and is divine.

How To Cook A Precooked Ham

My biggest problem is not to boil the glaze for too long, because when it starts to cool, it ends up as a hard caramel, and it’s very difficult to apply the glaze to the outside of the ham. Simmer lightly and quickly remove from heat.

I added the pan juices from the ham to the glaze when I had pan juices to use and WOW! amazing taste! My ham is not salty though, so do a taste test before adding the juices and add as much as you need to change the flavor even more.

With glaze and marinade and glaze and glaze and GO NUTS with it. The more the merrier, and it’s winter, right?

I’m hoping there’s a smell-ernet going on, because the juicy, tender brown sugar-mustard glazed ham smells as good as it looks.
