We often think about ordering them in restaurants when we are celebrating a special occasion BUT cooking crab legs at home is easier and much cheaper than ordering them. The cooking time is only a few minutes, which also makes them a quick option!

My step-by-step guide to cooking crab legs will show you the different ways to cook them, and information on which types of crab legs are best. I also give you some tips on how to stretch those legs so you can get into that delicious crab meat!

How To Prepare King Crab Legs

When choosing crab legs, you have a few options. I like to use either King Crab legs or Snow Crab legs (we used thawed snow crab legs in the photos).

King crab legs are usually the most expensive type, but as you can guess from the name, they are bigger and meatier than any other variety. The meat is sweet and buttery, somewhat like lobster meat.

Snow crab leg is also a good choice. They are smaller than King Crabs but still provide plenty of firm meat. Ice cubes are what I usually buy for crab leg recipes because the combinations give me a lot of meat for an inexpensive price point.

Most crabs are sold already cooked and frozen, so you reheat them. Thawed crab legs should be stored in the refrigerator and eaten within 1-2 days.

Boozy Garlic Butter Snow Crab Legs

You might be a little intimidated by the idea of ​​cooking crab legs at home, but I’m here to tell you that it’s really easy! There are many ways you can cook crab, so choose the method you’re most comfortable with and get cooking!

You know I can’t do it without my Instant pot, (I use this 6 Qt. model)! If you are like me and looking for any excuse to use your IP this is the way for you.

Bring salted water to a boil in a large pot. Put the crab legs under water and cook uncovered for 5 minutes. Sometimes the boiling crab legs can make the meat a little watery, so I may try one of the other methods first.

Brining the crab legs is a popular method because it helps lock in the flavor of the crab. You can also add water or add fresh herbs to add different flavors to the crab meat.

Snow Crab Legs In Garlic Butter Beer Sauce

Bring water to a boil in a large pot. Place the crab legs on a trivet basket or steamer basket and cover for 5-7 minutes.

Line a pan with foil or parchment paper, brush with melted butter or olive oil, and broil 6 inches away from the broiler set on high for 6 minutes, grilling halfway through.

Preheat the grill to medium heat, cook with melted butter or olive oil, and place the crab covered for 4 minutes.

You should plan for about 1 lb of crab legs per person if you are serving them as a main course. If you are serving them with other mains, or as a starter, ½ lb per person should be enough.

Crab legs are usually already cooked when you buy them frozen from the grocery store. Cooked crab shells should be red and the meat should be translucent. If you are cooking raw crab, the meat will be gray in color and will take a little longer to cook.

Yes, you can reheat crab legs. The best way is to reheat them for a few minutes, just like you did with the Instant Pot method or the steam method above.

Crab crackers or kitchen scissors are the best options for breaking the legs. The shell is very hard and when broken, the pieces can be sharp, so you may want the help of a knife to help you instead of just using your hands.

Serving crab legs with butter dipping sauce is a classic pairing. I like to serve the sauce on the side in small bowls, but you can also pour it over the crab legs before serving. You can find my recipe in the recipe card below.
