Cooking Snow Crab Legs In The Oven – Boiled crab legs are an easy way to cook crab – no worries about boiling a big pot of water – just throw it in the oven!

Crab cakes may be my favorite food and baking them in the oven has been my favorite way to cook them for years now! I tried this method for the first time when I didn’t have a pot big enough for the crab legs and me…so we tried it in the oven! Over the years I have changed my method and it is still my favorite way to cook them!

Boiled crab legs are effective because of the special water found in the crab legs. By putting them in the oven, you are actually burning them in their own water. It’s not hard, the flavor is amazing, and you don’t have to worry about having a pot big enough to hold your long crab legs!

Snow Crab Legs With Garlic Sauce Recipe

Crab legs usually take anywhere from 10 – 25 minutes to cook, depending on the type of crab you are cooking (snow crab takes less time than king crab) and whether or not it is fully thawed.

Not necessarily. You can cook them from frozen, but the cooking time will take longer and the preparation may be moist. For best results, I recommend thawing first.

The crab legs are done when their color changes to bright orange and they are hot. If in doubt, you can always open the other leg to try. If it’s not hot, just cook a little.

Founder and creator of The Wooden Skillet where I share healthy, easy, real food recipes for everyday life! Recently I decided it was time to expand my seafood repertoire. I have tons of recipes with salmon, tuna, and shrimp, but I’ve never had crab.

Of course, I use crab meat in Easy Seafood Lasagna and Easy Crab Cakes, but it’s fried or the meat is fried (that’s what makes these dishes easy). All the crabs, with their skins still on, looked terrible. So I decided to compromise. Instead of cooking the whole crab, I just cooked the crab legs. That’s where most of the meat is and I already know it’s delicious.

The main types of crab legs sold in supermarkets are snow crab and king crab. I decided to try the snow crab legs first. These come in bundles – a whole set of legs from one side of the crab. And it turns out that it is not difficult to cook at all. Just place them on a baking sheet lined with baking paper, add and bake. They are ready in minutes, ready to serve with melted butter and a squeeze of lemon.

To be honest, after trying it once, I don’t know what I was so afraid of. These frozen crab legs are so easy to make, I won’t be going back to them.

My bundles of crab legs came with claws. How do you get the meat out?

How To Cook Snow Crab Legs So They Crack Easily

I don’t like to boil crab legs because the water gets inside and you usually end up thirsty. It is easy to bake.

I use snow crab in this recipe, but you can also use king crab. Frozen crab legs are sold in bundles and usually by the pound. They are easier to handle and crack, compared to king crab legs, because they have a smooth shell. Usually there are four legs on the cluster. Their taste is mild and sweet.

Crab legs have a tough shell. They are large in size and are usually sold individually (by the foot) by the pound. The meat is tender and sweet. They are more expensive than winter crab. (I usually get this before the year is over!).

Most crabs come uncooked and usually frozen. Sometimes, if it is sold thawed, it has been thawed from the ice. When the crabs are caught, they are boiled in a boat and then frozen right there. If the crab legs are orange or red in color when you buy them, they are already cooked. This method is burning them again.

The best way to thaw is to refrigerate overnight (about 8 hours). You can also put them in a bowl and pour cold water over them so that they melt faster.

Detailed measurements and complete instructions can be found on the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

The crab should be cooked until the meat is pearly or white and opaque. You won’t be able to tell much from the outside color, because when you bought them they were already cooked and orange. Look at the shoulder (this is the big white part of the cluster). It should be clean.

You should plan on 1 1/2 pounds of crab per person, especially if you have crab lovers. Maybe even 2 pounds!

How To Cook Crab Legs (5 Ways!)

Cracking a snow crab is easy for me. I keep my leg straight, the back of my foot facing me. Then press down on the middle of the foot or about 1/4 up from the bottom of the foot. I can always tell when a crab is fully cooked (hot) and charred because of its easy cracking.

If when I split the leg it doesn’t reveal a nice piece of meat and the meat is stuck inside, it is usually because the crab was not cooked long enough or it was not split soon after it was cooked. The longer they sit, the more difficult it is to split them and remove the meat easily.

No, make sure to thaw first. I thaw them in the refrigerator. Using ice, in my experience, creates too much water in the crab.

I don’t learn anymore. I like to serve this with warm oil and it gives the heat I need. If you know you’re going to eat more later, break it down first. The longer they sit, the more likely they will crack and the meat will stick inside.
