Cooking Time For Turkey Drumsticks

Cooking Time For Turkey Drumsticks – Roast turkey with hints of paprika and garlic, super moist and delicious, and a great alternative to whole roast turkey if you have a small gathering and don’t want to cook a whole bird. Turkey legs cook much faster and go well with the whole family.

When I think of holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas, I automatically picture mountains of giant plates that make my mouth water and stomach growl. But if you don’t have a big family or your gathering is quite small, there is no point in preparing such a gigantic celebration.

I’ve never roasted a whole turkey, but I was quite happy with my crown roast turkey which was big enough for us, and now these delicious turkey sticks made us a great roast. They are obviously much larger than regular chicken drumsticks and 2 feet can usually feed a family of 4 very well.

Roasted Turkey Legs

Depending on the size of the turkey legs, they should not take more than an hour and a half to an hour and a half – and this again has to do with the temperature of the oven. I chose to roast these turkey drumsticks over high heat and was very happy with the result.

As mentioned earlier, the weight of the turkey drumsticks will dictate the cooking time – if you think it needs more time in the oven, you can add another 10-15 minutes.

Since the sticks are covered in foil, they don’t dry out, but stay moist and juicy. Turkey legs have dark meat, which does not dry out as much as the white meat from the turkey’s crown.

The butter will also help massively in keeping your feet moist, and very tasty too. You can replace it with oil if you want, it will still help with moisture.

Have you been to the Renaissance Festival before? It’s a lot of fun…but one of my favorite things to do at RenFest? EAT TURKEY FEET! In fact, anywhere that sells turkey legs, I almost always get it.

Something so fun when you swallow a giant stick. So cavewoman like! Anyway, you don’t have to wait for a festival to eat one. You can make it yourself! It is actually extremely simple.

I guess I can’t write about this recipe without thinking about the FIRST time I ever had turkey before. It was at Disney. And it wasn’t called Turkey Legs. It was called Alien Legs! I doubted it was actually Alien Legs at the time – but part of me wanted to believe it. Haha

Ok, now we can see the recipe. It’s not quite like RenFest or Disney World, but it’s easy to make and delicious!

Many supermarkets sell real turkey legs and they are usually around the poultry section next to chicken. I got mine at Publix.

This mostly depends on how big your turkey legs are, but the average for me is about 1 hour at 15 minutes, 15 minutes, then 30 minutes (the recipe tells you the exact steps).

You can heat up turkey legs in the oven! I recommend taking the turkey legs out of the fridge to bring them to room temperature. Put it in a pan and cover with aluminum foil and heat for about 30 minutes.

Place on a baking sheet. I like to put a layer of aluminum foil on the pan for easy cleanup, but it’s totally up to you.

Remove from the heat and using tongs, turn them over so that the underside is now on top. Return to the oven for a further 15 minutes.

I get asked this a lot so I thought I’d add this section – technically dogs can eat turkey. In fact, it is often used as an ingredient in dog food.

Tandoori Turkey Drumsticks

But if you’re going to feed your dog some turkey, you want to make sure it’s well done. Unfortunately, this means that Thanksgiving turkey is often not good for dogs because it is usually rubbed with butter or oil, heavily seasoned, and perhaps stuffed with onions and garlic (both of which are NOT safe for dogs).

Does foil cover mean wrapping foil loosely around each leg or loosely covering the pan with foil?

Hello. I followed your recipe. I’m sure it’s good. The turkey legs got dry and rubbery😢 Any suggestions?

Cooking Time For Turkey Drumsticks

Oh no! Sorry to hear that – your oven may be more efficient than mine (mine is very old) and actually take less time. If a turkey is cooked too long, the muscle proteins coagulate and cause dryness. Maybe instead of the last 30 minutes, try 20 minutes and check for doneness (juice runs clear and instant read thermometer reads 165°F) and if not reset and bake in 5 minute increments until done!

Honey Glaze Turkey Legs A Thanksgiving Treat

Does “pan” mean standard 13×9? I would like to try it, but I want to make the right dish.

Hello! It’s basically any parchment paper that will fit your turkey legs without stuffing. So if you’re making 1 you can use a smaller pan and if you’re making a bunch you’ll want a big one, or maybe use more than 1 so they don’t touch each other. Oven-roasted, flavorful and juicy herb-roasted turkey legs for days when a whole turkey is just too much food or you’re cooking for a smaller party.

When I came up with this recipe for Herb Roasted Turkey Legs, I thought about what the holidays meant to me and how the holidays won’t always be big family gatherings for everyone.

There are many single or 2 households (like us) who want to enjoy turkey for the holidays, but having a whole turkey isn’t very practical because it’s a lot of food!

Roasted Turkey Legs (easy, Juicy, Crispy!)

In such cases, why not cook the turkey in smaller portions right? Especially since it would surely be tender and juicy because we use dark meat!

But being dark meat is not enough to keep it juicy and tender, the secret is that you have to salt it in a salt solution.

If you want to use turkey legs instead, I also have a recipe for Simple Oven Roasted Turkey Legs with Coffee Rub that you might enjoy!

This roast turkey leg recipe is not only for special occasions, but because of the long cooking time they also make great little Sunday dinners instead of roasts 🙂

Easy Roasted Turkey Legs

For this roast turkey leg recipe, I kept the brine somewhat simple and used salt, water, bay leaves, garlic and black cardamom.

You can omit the black cardamom for the brine without much difference in taste, but I strongly recommend keeping it in with the garlic and bay leaves.

When I cook any type of poultry (or lean meats like pork chops), I like to use brine.

It’s a bit more work, but worth it because it makes the meat juicier and tender by using the salt to draw water into the meat – food science!

Kung Pao Turkey Drumsticks Recipe

When working with salt and brine, it’s also very easy to overdo it, which can make meat too salty.

Through trial and error, I have found that my sweet spot is 3 tablespoons of salt with 8-9 cups of water.

Go with 8 cups of water if you prefer saltier meat, go with 9 cups of water for less salty meat.
