This recipe is the kitchen instructions for my Instant Pot Dog Food Recipe. I know that not everyone has an Instant Pot (I totally recommend using one to make life easier 😉 ), so I decided to make instructions that everyone can use.

These recipes were created because the commercial dog foods we have don’t exactly provide what we’re looking for in terms of optimal nutrition and we want something without unnecessary additives, so we talked to our vet and he decided. Homemade dog food would be a great option for us.
This recipe is very similar to what you get at the grocery store from Fresh Pets (I think Costco sells it in big tubes), you can control what goes into it, and it’s fun to make yourself!
The good thing about making your own dog food is that you can think about your dog’s needs and any food allergies they may have. Instead of reading a million labels, you control what goes into your diet. If your dog is a picky eater, you can give him what you know he likes:

Here’s how to make homemade dog food on the stovetop. (To make homemade dog food in your Instant Pot, you can see my recipe Homemade Dog Food in an Instant Pot).
First, heat a medium or large pot on the stove and prepare the meat. (Figures 1 – 3) Drain the fat and discard it once it has cooled. (Figure 4)
Then add the drained meat back to the pot and add the coconut oil and frozen vegetables. (I add a bag or two, aiming for 20-24 ounces of frozen vegetables. If you’re using a 12-ounce bag, use two. If you’re using a 16-ounce bag, use one and a half.) (Figure 5) Mix and Mix in the coconut oil and let it melt

Bring to a boil, then reduce heat until most of the liquid has cooked off and the oats are tender. (Figure 8)
Remove the bowl from the heat and allow the dog food to cool before serving or storing. Food can be divided into portions according to your needs; I usually cut it in half and freeze a batch. I use a measuring cup when serving food so I don’t spend time portioning it out.
I like a mixed veggie mix from Walmart or Aldi, peas or green beans, carrots and corn. (Don’t use anything with onions!) The last mix I bought also had lima beans in it. You can also use a bag of carrots mixed with a bag of chopped beans. (You know your dog, so feed them what they like – this is an easy recipe to use what you can get/take off the shelf!)
Absolutely! Fruits contain many excellent nutrients for dogs. Just don’t go with it. We often use what’s in season or what’s in the fridge. We like to use some berries – strawberries or blueberries are the best. Do not use grapes as they are very harmful to dogs. You can add fruit before or after cooking, just be careful if you cook with blueberries, your dog’s food will turn purple 😉
Homemade Dog Treat Recipes
The easiest grains to use in homemade dog food are oats and leftover cooked rice. (Both brown or white work; obviously, don’t use leftover fried rice with onions!) If your dog has a grain allergy, you can substitute diced sweet potatoes.
We like to add all kinds of leftovers: cooked duck (it’s a bit greasy, greasy and heavy so we don’t like to use it as a main protein source), roast beef, pot roast, grilled chicken.. even pork. Sometimes we add eggs, beef stock, duck stock, or maybe some wild game (he likes venison and some tough cuts that we don’t love!)
We supplement his diet with raw beans (marrows still frozen) and raw pig’s feet. He loves them in all their wickedness and shamelessness.

Here’s our personal experience: I feed Melly heaps of food twice a day (with a small scoop of homemade yogurt on top) and her weight gain averages 40 to 45 pounds. He absolutely loves it! (For dry kibble, eat 1 cup twice a day, start at that amount and see if you need to increase or decrease after a few days).
If Mellie has had a very active day running around like a border collie, chasing squirrels through the trees or patrolling the fence, I’ll give her a little extra for dinner. Our vet likes to rotate us different meats, vegetables and fruits; It provides a variety of nutrients to a dog as found in the wild.
If your dog has been eating kibble his entire life, he may develop diarrhea so make this transition slowly. For dogs that eat a lot of garbage, you can manage to replace about ¼ of the food with this food for 3-4 days, then switch half and half for 3-4 days, then ¾ new food + ¼ old food. For 3-4 days, then 100% new food!
If your dog is really sensitive, I would do a week or two at each stage. Mellie doesn’t mind these transitions because I’m always adding weird new things to her homemade food, but if your dog has been eating the same kibble her whole life, you need to go slow.
Home Cooked Dog Food Chicken And Oatmeal
I serve Mellie’s food both hot and cold; Not too spicy. I often top it with 1/4 cup plain yogurt (no sweetener added) when I serve it. Yogurt is not necessary, but it provides probiotics and helps with healthy digestion. I love making plain Greek yogurt in my Instant Pot.

To supplement the calcium in this diet, I add bone meal or broccoli stalks as plant parts. You can store them in the refrigerator and use them as needed. You can also add a can of sardines packed in water. Warning, the broccoli stems and sardines in this dish smell like…a fart.
This recipe is really flexible. You can use beef, turkey, fresh fish or chicken. You can also use shredded chicken breast. The only thing I don’t recommend is canned fish, because it can be very fatty and can cause pancreatitis.

I alternate between oats and rice and I change the vegetables and fruits depending on what we have and what’s in season. Mellie is a former street kid and will eat almost anything, especially if you cook everything together, so let’s give her all kinds of fun veggies!
