Microsoft Flight Simulator is the next generation of one of the most beloved simulator series. Now, when I close my eyes, I see myself in the cockpit, the horizon in the distance and the world far below me slowly passing by. I’ve spent so much time flying in VR that I’ve started daydreaming about my adventures — gliding across the Balkans overlooking picture-perfect coastal towns or landing on a lonely strip of land in Patagonia. I guess that makes sense: in a sense, dreams are the original virtual reality.

Despite the amazing experience, it’s clear that Flight Simulator developer Asobo still has VR going for it. First, there are many mistakes. When I ran it on an Oculus Quest 2 powered by Oculus Link, everything worked fine for a few minutes, but eventually some confusing game windows filled the virtual cockpit. After restarting the game (a process that usually takes about two minutes) and restarting Quest 2, it refused to start in VR mode at all. At that point I just gave up and plugged in the newly released HP Reverb G2.
VR mode, so I reserve judgement. Microsoft and Asobo also deserve credit for opening up the game to every OpenXR headset (which includes most SteamVR models). I came into the game with no real knowledge of flight, but the VR experience was still a revelation. Instead of using the Xbox gamepad to switch between the different camera views, I could just lean into the panels and select to see them more clearly. I just look out the window to see the view – this is especially helpful when landing and navigating rough terrain. You can even disrupt the reality of the game a bit by sticking your head all the way out the plane window to literally see the world from a bird’s eye view.
Switching between 2D and VR modes is pretty simple: press Control and Tab on the title screen or click the VR mode option in the settings. I’d like to see a headset shortcut that lets you boot directly into VR mode. Oculus and Windows Mixed Reality devices give you easy access to your Windows desktop, so you can always start your game from there.
It doesn’t support VR controllers yet, which is a little disappointing. I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the arm and fiddle with the dials realistically. Instead, I had to use my Xbox One controller as usual and keep my keyboard and mouse nearby. Of course, if you’re lucky enough to have a flying stick, you can still use it as normal. However, you’ll still need a mouse to control the virtual pointer, which means you can click various switches, buttons, and control the game’s virtual tool windows. As a casual gamer, I’ve never seen the need to invest in a flight stick, but I’m definitely considering it now that I’ve fallen more in love with Flight Simulator VR.
Considering how demanding the game is, you’ll need a powerful system to really enjoy your VR experience. VR games typically need 90 fps to effectively fill 90 Hz screens on most headsets, which is well above the 60 fps standard for 2D games.
