This recipe is a guide to making my instant dog food recipe. I know that not everyone has an Instant Pot (although I recommend using it to make life easier 😉 ), so I decided to create a tutorial that everyone can use.

The 7 Best Dog Foods For Allergies Of 2023

These recipes came about because the commercial dog food options available didn’t quite provide what we were looking for in terms of optimal nutrition and we wanted something without unnecessary additives, so we talked to our vet and decided that a homemade dog food dogs is a good choice for us.

This recipe is pretty comparable to what you get at the grocery store from Fresh Pet (I think Costco sells it in big tubes), except you can control what’s in it and it’s fun to make yourself!

The great thing about making your own dog food is that you can think about your dog’s needs and any food allergies they may have. Instead of reading a million labels, you’re in control of what’s in your food. If your dog is a picky eater, you can feed him what you know he likes:

Dogs are just like humans when it comes to nutrition, there is no ‘one size fits all’ solution – it’s called bio-individuality. All dogs are omnivores, where they thrive on eating animals and plants – unlike cats, which are strictly carnivores – but the types of animals and plants they feed on vary from dog to dog.

How To Prepare Homemade Puppy Food

Some dogs are allergic to chicken, others to salmon. Some can only eat meat. Find what works for your dog and he will thrive! Like people – I end up in the hospital eating poblano peppers and have good friends die from peanuts. Bodies are wild.

Here’s how to make homemade dog food on the stove. (If you want to make homemade dog food in your Instant Pot, you can check out my Homemade Instant Pot Dog Food recipe.)

First, heat a medium or large pot on the stove and cook the ground beef. (Images 1-3) Skim off all fat and discard when cool. (Figure 4)

Then add the soaked meat back to the pot and add the coconut oil and frozen vegetables. (I add one or two bags, aiming for 20-24 ounces, of frozen vegetables. If using a 12-ounce bag, use two. If using a 16-ounce bag, use one and a medium one.) (Figure 5) Stir until combined and melted coconut oil.

Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer until most of the liquid has boiled away and the oats have softened. (Figure 8)

Remove the pot from the heat and allow the dog food to cool before serving or storing. You can divide the meal into portions depending on your needs – I usually divide it in half and freeze the batch. I use a cup to measure out a portion of food so I don’t take the time to portion it out.

I like a mixed veggie mix from Walmart or Aldi which is peas or green beans, carrots and corn. (Don’t use anything with onions in it!) The last mix I bought also had lima seeds in it. You can also use a bag of carrots mixed with a bag of chopped green beans. (You know your dog, feed them what they want – this is a simple recipe using what you get at the store / what’s on hand!)

Absolutely! Fruit contains many nutrients that are good for dogs. Just don’t overdo it. We always use what’s in season or what’s in the freezer. We like to use a variety of berries – strawberries or blueberries work best. DO NOT use grapes as they are bad for dogs. You can add fruit before or after cooking, just be careful, if you cook with blueberries, the dog food will turn purple 😉

The easiest grains to use in your homemade dog food are oats and leftover cooked rice. (Brown or white work just as well – just don’t use leftover roast beef with onions, of course!) If your dog has a grain allergy, you can substitute diced sweet potatoes.

We like to add a little bit of leftovers to all kinds of things: cooked duck (we don’t like to use it as our main protein source because it’s a bit fatty, greasy and heavy), roast duck, roast, grilled chicken.. even pork. Sometimes we also add eggs, beef broth, duck broth, or sometimes even game (he likes back meat and some tough cuts, which we don’t!)

We supplement his diet with raw marrow bones (frozen with the marrow still in them) and raw pig’s feet. He loves them in all their nastiness, stupidity.

The most important thing is to make sure and discuss portion sizes and ingredients with your vet before switching your dog to a new food.

Healthy Homemade Dog Food, Low Carb Gluten Free Dog Food

Here’s our personal experience: I feed Melly 1 cup twice a day (with a small dollop of homemade yogurt on top) and her weight averages between 40 and 45 pounds. He really likes it! (With dry kibble, he eats 1 cup twice a day, so you can start with the same amount and see after a few days if you need to increase or change it.)

If Melly has had an especially active day, running around like a border collie chasing squirrels up trees or patrolling the fence, I’ll give her something extra at dinner. Our vet likes that we alternate between different types of meat, vegetables and fruit – it gives him as many different nutrients as a dog would find in the wild.

If your dog has spent his entire life eating kibble, do so slowly as he may develop diarrhea. For dogs that eat a lot of table scraps, you can replace about ¼ of the food with this food for 3-4 days, then switch to half-and-half for 3-4 days, then ¾ of the new food + ¼ of the old food for 3-4 days, then 100% new food!

If your dog is very sensitive, I would do one week to two weeks in each phase. Melly doesn’t have a problem with these changes because I keep adding new things to her homemade food, but if your dog has been eating the same kibble all his life, you need to slow down.

I serve Melly’s food warm or cold – she is not very picky. When serving, I always add 1/4 cup plain yogurt (no added sweeteners). Yogurt is not necessary, but it provides probiotics and helps with healthy digestion. I love making plain Greek yogurt in my Instant Pot.

To add calcium to this dish, I also add bone meal or broccoli stems as part of the vegetables. You can store it in the freezer and use it when needed. You can also add a can of sardines packed in water. Good warning, the broccoli and sardine stems make this dish smell… like a fart.

This recipe is really flexible. You can use ground beef, turkey, fresh fish or chicken. You can also use shredded chicken breast. The only thing I don’t recommend is canned fish because it can be very greasy and too much can lead to pancreatitis.

Two Great, Healthy Homemade Dog Food Recipes

I switch between oats and rice and change the vegetables and fruits depending on what we have and what the season is. Melly is a former street witch and will eat almost anything, especially if you cook it all, so we’ll be feeding her all kinds of fun vegetables!

I’m a newlywed, food blogger, health coach and mom to a hot mess border collie. I love putting a new spin on old family recipes and try to make as many meals as possible using the Instant Pot. This recipe will teach you how to prepare drool-worthy meals for your furry friend. It is made from a combination of healthy, readily available ingredients that contain a balanced ratio of carbohydrates, fats, fiber and protein.
