Step 1. Place boneless chicken thighs in the Instant Pot. Add a cup of water. Cover and set the Instant Pot to “pressure cook” for 20 minutes. Allow the pressure to release naturally.
Step 3. Place in a large pot, add twice as much water and bring to a boil. Once it boils, skim the foam once, reduce the heat, and cover the pot so the grits finish cooking and all the water evaporates.
Step 4. Once the chicken is cooked, release the pressure safely. Open the Instant Pot and, using two large forks, shred the chicken into small pieces.
Step 5. While the chicken is still hot, add all the vegetables to the pot, mix well and let cool. Once the buckwheat groats are cooked, combine them with the chicken and vegetable mixture. Add oil and mix well. Store in the refrigerator or freeze in portioned ziplocks.

First, heat a medium or large pot on the stove and cook the minced meat. (Pictures 1-3) Drain off any fat and discard when cool. (Figure 4)
Then add the drained meat to the pot, coconut oil and frozen vegetables. (I aim for 20-24 ounces and add a bag or two of frozen vegetables. If you’re using a 12-ounce bag, use two. If you’re using a 16-ounce bag, use one-half.) (Figure 5) Stir to combine and let the coconut oil melt.
How To Make Homemade Dog Food On The Stove
Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer until the oats have boiled off most of the liquid. (Figure 8)
Remove the bowl from the heat and allow the dog food to cool before serving or storing. Meals can be divided into portions as needed – I usually divide in half and freeze a batch. I use a measuring cup when serving food so I don’t waste time dividing it into individual portions.
I like a mixed vegetable mix from Walmart or Aldi, such as peas or green beans, carrots, and corn. (Don’t use any onions in it!) The last mix I bought had lima beans in it. You can also use a bag of carrots mixed with a bag of chopped green beans. (You know your dog, so give him what he likes – this is an easy recipe to use what you get from the store/have on hand!)
Of course! Fruits are rich in nutrients that are great for dogs. Don’t overdo it. We often use what is in season or in the freezer. We like to use any berries – strawberries or blueberries work great. Do not use grapes as they are very harmful to dogs. You can add fruit before or after cooking, just beware that cooking with blueberries will turn your dog food purple 😉
Homemade Dog Food For Large Dogs Recipe (affordable And Easy To Do)
The easiest grains to use in homemade dog food are oats and cooked rice. (Brown or white are fine – don’t use leftover onions for fried rice takeout, of course!) If your dog has a grain allergy, you can substitute sweet potatoes.
We like to add a little bit of leftovers from all sorts of things: cooked duck (which we don’t like to use as our main protein source because it’s a bit fatty, fatty and heavy), roast beef, pot roast, grilled chicken…even pork. We sometimes add eggs, beef stock, duck stock, or sometimes even some wild game (she really likes venison and some tough cuts that we don’t like!)
We supplement her diet with raw shin bones (frozen with brains) and raw pig’s feet. She loves them in all her disgusting, shallowness.
The most important thing is to be sure and discuss portion sizes and ingredients with your vet before switching to a new diet.

Here’s our personal experience: I feed Mellie 1 cup twice a day (with a small scoop of homemade yogurt) and she averages 40-45 lbs. She really likes it! (For dry fiber, she eats 1 cup daily, so you can start at the same amount and see if you increase or decrease it after a few days.)
If Mellie had a very active day, like the border collie chasing squirrels in the trees or patrolling the fence, I’d give her a little extra for dinner. Our vet loves that we rotate a variety of meats, vegetables, and fruits—it provides a variety of nutrients that a dog would find in the wild.
