Whether it’s boiling, baking or steaming, everyone seems to have an opinion on the best way to cook crab. While I’ve tried many methods myself, hands down, my favorite is the super easy Instant Pot Crab Legs!

Classic King Crab Recipe

First of all, it couldn’t be easier. The Instant Pot does all the work for you, and cleanup is a breeze. Second, the crab turns out juicy and tasty every time! Oh, and did I mention the whole thing takes about 10 minutes?

Whether you’ve been planning a seafood feast for weeks or happen to see crab legs for sale at the store, you’ll love how they turn out after steaming in the Instant Pot. Served with garlic butter, they are simply perfect!

I made this recipe using my Instant Pot 6-Quart Duo Nova. It’s the perfect size for my family of four and makes steaming easier than a standard Instant Pot.

Snow Crab Legs

STEP ONE: Pour water into the bottom of your Instant Pot and place the trays in the pot.

STEP TWO: Place the crab leg clusters on the trivet. Secure the head and check that the valve is set to seal.

STEP THREE: Cook on Manual High Pressure for 2 minutes. When the time is up, do a quick pressure release.

If crab is going to be the main dish, you should plan to serve about a pound per adult, which would be eight or nine legs. If the crab is part of a seafood dish or accompanied by many sides, half a kilo per adult is more reasonable.

If you have extra crab, you’ll want to refrigerate it within two hours of cooking. I recommend storing it in a shallow airtight container or wrapped in heavy aluminum foil.

Most of the crab legs you get from the store are pre-cooked, and then you can buy them either frozen or frozen. “Cooking” is really all about heating, which doesn’t take long!

You set your Instant Pot for 2 minutes, but keep in mind that the pressure cooker takes a while before the cooking time starts. Once that’s done, you’ll make a quick exit, which takes about a minute. Start-to-finish, the crab is ready in 10 minutes or less.

Steamed Crab Legs

Since crab sticks are sold pre-cooked, all we want to do is reheat the meat before serving. Therefore, I recommend only cooking them for 2 minutes if thawed or 4 minutes if frozen.

Crab legs are usually sold cooked, so the reheating instructions are the same as the original cooking instructions. However, I do not recommend heating them more than once, as they will become rubbery.

Crabs must be sold live or cooked. In most grocery stores, crab legs are sold precooked and either frozen or frozen from frozen. Since most crabs are sold already cooked, the process of “cooking” them is really simple – you basically just heat them up enough while retaining their juiciness and natural flavor. Can you guess our favorite way?

The combination of butter, garlic and lemon is very good with seafood. We use a similar flavor profile in our Broiled Lobster Tails and Baked Salmon.

It doesn’t get any easier: In a small pot, melt 4 tablespoons of butter and then stir in 2 chopped garlic cloves, 1/4 teaspoon of salt and 1/8 teaspoon of pepper. Stir for only 30 seconds and remove from heat. Squeeze in 1/2 tsp lemon juice.

Here’s How To Reheat Crab Legs For An Uber Satisfying Meal

We’ve covered all the best ways to cook crawfish, from the Instant Pot to steaming, grilling and even baking in the oven. If I had to pick a favorite, I’d go with Instant Pot crab legs when cooking for 2 because it’s so quick, and steamed crab when you’re feeding more people.

Pro Tip: Set up your Instant Pot outside or let it drain under the stove hood or your kitchen will smell great!

Place a steam basket in the bottom of a large stockpot with 1 cup of water. Add as many crab legs as your pot will fit and still close the lid tightly. Bring the water to a boil and then cover and steam cook until fragrant and piping hot (about 5 minutes for thawed or 10 minutes for frozen crab legs).

Using heavy aluminum foil, make a foil pack for 4 clusters of crab legs. Bring the two ends together in the middle, and fold them twice. Then fold the other two ends twice to seal the foil pack. Do not add water to the foil pack. This will evaporate the natural moisture from the crab legs.

Oven Crab Legs

Roast on medium/high heat or about 450˚F for 15-20 minutes if frozen or 10 minutes if thawed. It is ready when you see steam when you open the foil pack.

Make the same foil pack as in the grill method with 4 crab leg clusters. Place on a baking sheet and bake on the middle rack of a preheated oven at 450˚F for 25 minutes for frozen or 15 minutes for thawed crab legs. They are ready when they steam when you open the foil pack.

All crabs come either pre-cooked (sold frozen or doubled from frozen), or live. Since most crabs are sold pre-cooked and frozen, you can stock up when it goes on sale (often around Valentine’s Day) and freeze for later). I like to buy them frozen and thaw them when I need them for maximum freshness. Grilled crabs should be refrigerated and consumed within 1-2 days.
