The short answer is that you can; However, this is not recommended. Depending on who you ask, this topic can be controversial; So let’s deal with the facts.

According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), food should be kept at a certain temperature in order to maintain food safety standards. If food is not stored properly, you are at risk of food contamination and food-borne diseases such as salmonella. Here’s what the FDA says about meat and poultry.

“Bacteria grow rapidly in the temperature range between 40°F [4°C] and 140°F [60°C], doubling within 20 minutes. This temperature range is called the “danger zone”. Do not refrigerate food if the temperature exceeds 90°F. Do not leave more than 1 hour.”

The problem is, frozen food can take a long time to thaw in a slow cooker, especially when cooked on low heat. Once frozen chicken is thawed, it must have an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) to be safe to eat. Depending on the size of the frozen meat, it may take longer than 2 hours.

It is safest to completely submerge the frozen chicken in the slow cooker before cooking. Remember to use a cooking thermometer before serving the chicken.
