Snow Crab Legs In Oven – Baked in garlic butter, these crab legs are made with Old Bay seasoning or snow crab legs or king crab legs. They are so easy to bake in the oven! They are ready in 25 minutes and burst easily.

I don’t like to cook crab legs because water gets in and you’ll often end up with a soggy mess. Baking bread is easier.

I use snow crab in this recipe, but you can also use king crab. Crab legs are sold in groups and usually by the pound. Compared to crab legs, they are easier to handle and crack since they have a smooth shell. Each group usually has at least 4 legs. Their taste is mild and sweet.

Oven Crab Legs

King crab legs have very spiny armor. They come in large sizes and are usually sold individually (by the foot) by the pound. The meat is slightly softer and sweeter. They are much more expensive than snow crabs. (I usually get them for New Years!).

Most crabs are pre-cooked and often frozen. Sometimes it is thawed if sold thawed. Once caught, the daggers are cooked on the boat and immediately frozen on the spot. If the crab legs are orange or red when you get them, they are already cooked. This process reheats them.

The best way to thaw is to refrigerate overnight (at least 8 hours). You can also put them in a bowl and cover them with cold water so that they melt quickly.

Crayfish meat should be cooked until pearlescent or white and opaque. You won’t be able to tell much by the outside color because when you get them they are already cooked and orange in color. Look at the shoulder (it’s the big white part of the set). It should be pearly white.

Cracking snow crab is easy for me. I hold my foot horizontally, the back of my foot facing me. Then press on the middle of the foot or about 1/4 of the height from the bottom of the foot. I can always tell if a crab is fully cooked (reheated) and fresh by how easily it cracks.

If a nice piece of meat doesn’t come back when I break a leg and the meat is stuck inside, it’s usually because the lobster wasn’t cooked long enough or didn’t open quickly enough after cooking. The longer they sit, the harder it is for the meat to crack and remove easily.

No, melt them first. I thaw them in the refrigerator. In my experience, using frozen creates excess water in the crab.

I don’t heat them. I like to serve them with hot butter and it allows for the temperature adjustment I need. If you know you want to eat more later, break them up first. The longer they sit, the harder it is to crack and the meat inside becomes more tense.
