Playing the PC version of Surgeon Simulator, Bossa Studios’ gory slapstick surgery game, was like being in control of a mechanized shell of a human being whose individual arm, hand, and fingers were controlled by tiny mechanical pilots. On the third, there were still obvious issues with the way my hands were tracked and some sketchy physical setbacks, but something inside me clicked and I was able to do a dozen or more trades in a row with minimal effort. failures. At that point I flew through it. It’s a game you could theoretically beat in a single session, but there’s replayability in the proceedings, optional objectives, and weird secrets.
Bossa Studios, for its part, publicly stated that it “got the controls wrong” after the game received severe feedback from PSVR players. The plan, according to the team, is to offer “absolute tracking” (which is what the Vive and Oculus versions use) and make collision detection “kinder” to your hands. I didn’t really have much trouble with the first complaint – the “relative tracking” allowed me to achieve things that would normally put me outside the required PlayStation camera gaze and into the so-called dead zone – but the last flaw is the real annoyance. It’s a killer game.
